Eric Cheetham is a Buddhist Scholar with over fifty years in this field. His early teachers were Prof. R.H. Robinson and Dr. E. Conze. His first studies were in the Pāli texts of Theravāda Buddhism, but from 1956 onward his focus of studies and practice has been in the extensive range of Indian Mahāyāna. From the 1950s onward he founded and led several independent study and practice groups under the titles of Dharma Study Group and latterly, several Mahāyāna study groups.

From 1975 onwards he led classes on Mahāyāna Buddhism, at a succession of Buddhist Society Summer Schools, and from the mid 1980s until the late 1990s he directed courses in Mainstream and Mahāyāna Buddhism, at the Buddhist Society, London. These later courses continue to the present day, though now presented by those who attended Eric Cheetham’s first presentations.
This author continues with more advanced studies into Indian Mahāyāna and Chinese Buddhism, and is a regular contributor to the Buddhist Society Magazine.
